I grew up eating only south Indian food and sea foods. Lucky to be on coastal side, we always had fresh fish, prawns, crab and what not :).
Unlike now ,We rarely used to go out  to have food, it used to be for a very very special occasion only.Once I stepped out of home for studies, job I started eating in restaurants. From then I started loving north Indian dishes as much as south Indian dishes.

Masoor Dal Makhani is creamy, flavorful gravy cooked with Masoor dal
Serves: 4-5

Ingredients:
1 Cup Whole Masoor Dal
1 tsp Ginger grated
1 Tbsp Ghee/Oil
1/2 tsp Cumin Seeds
1 Onion finely chopped
1 Green Chilly
2 tsp Ginger Garlic paste
3 Tomato pureed or finely chopped ( 1 cup puree)
1/2 tsp Coriander powder
1 tsp Red Chilli powder
1/2 tsp Kasoori methi
1 Tbsp of Butter
1/2 tsp Garam masala
1 Tbsp Cream
Coriander Leaves to garnish
Salt to taste

Directions:
1.Wash and Soak the dal for atleast 4 hour. Pressure cook the dal with 2 Cup Water ,salt and ginger until cooked soft(approx 5 whistles).
2.Heat the ghee/oil in a pan. When oil is hot add cumin seeds.
3.When cumin seeds splutters add onion and saute till it turns light brown.Now add Green chilly, Ginger Garlic paste and saute for a minute.
4.Now add Tomato Puree or chopped tomato and cook till oil separates.
5.Add Coriander powder,Red Chilli powder and saute for a minute.Let the masala get cooked well.
6.Add cooked dal, crushed kasoori methi ,butter ,salt(remember we have added salt while cooking dal) and cook covered on sim for 10-15 minute.
7.Add water if required (if dal is too thick).Finally add garam masala and mix well and let it be on sim for 5 more minutes.
8.Garnish with cream and coriander leaves and enjoy.
