Patholi / Suli Rotti is a traditional sweet dish made in coastal / Konkan region using turmeric leaves. These are nothing but steamed rice rolls which is stuffed with coconut jaggery mixture and wrapped in turmeric leaves.It is called patholi in konkani and we call it as suli rotti in kannada since coconut suli (coconut flakes) is used.
In coastal region,fresh Turmeric Leaves are found during rainy season. These leaves are so flavorful that it leaves the fragrance to any dish u cook. Suli Rotti/ Patholi is one special dessert usually prepared during festivals in rainy season. Usually we start doing from Nagar Panchami festival and then keep doing till we get the fresh leaves :). It is favourite of everyone in the home . You will love it too.Flavors left by turmeric leaves is amazing to the dish.
If you are in Bangalore, you will get these leaves in Mangalore stores during rainy season.

Ingredients:
18 Turmeric Leaves(Small to Medium)
1.5 Cup Rice
Water to Soak Rice
Salt to taste
Filling.
2.5 Cup Grated Coconut
2 Cup Powdered Jaggery
1/2 Tbsp Ghee
1/2 tsp Cardamom powder
1 tsp Wheat Flour[Optional]
1 Tbsp Water[Optional]

Patholi / Suli Rotti is steamed rice rolls which is stuffed with coconut jaggery mixture and wrapped in turmeric leaves
Yield: 18
Ingredients:
18 Turmeric Leaves(Small to Medium)
1.5 Cup Rice
Water to Soak Rice
Salt to taste
Filling.
2.5 Cup Grated Coconut
2 Cup Powdered Jaggery
1/2 Tbsp Ghee
1/2 tsp Cardamom powder
1 tsp Wheat Flour[Optional]
1 Tbsp Water[Optional]
Directions:
1.Soak Rice minimum one hour . I soak it overnight.
2.Remove the water,add salt and grind into smooth ,thick paste using very little water.
3.Wash the Turmeric Leaves and wipe them with dry cloth.Make it to half if leaves are very big.
Lets make filling.
1.Heat the heavy bottom pan and add ghee to it.
2.When Ghee melts add jaggery and water [optional] to it.Let the jaggery melt.
Water is added to melt jaggery easily without burning.
3.Once the Jaggery starts melting add grated Coconut and mix well.
4.Add Cardomom powder and saute for few seconds till mixture leaves aroma.
5.Keep stirring. Once the mixture thickens and comes together sprinkle with wheat flour and give a mix and switch off.
6.Don't overcook, as mixture will burn and get thicken and hard after cooling.
7.Let the mixture cool down.
Lets steam
1.Take the turmeric leave and apply the thin layer of rice paste on shining side of the leaf.
(leave the edges to wrap).
2.Add Filling mixture on the center of the leaf.
3.Fold at center and seal the edges by pressing gently and then Fold the ends.
4.Place it on steamer and repeat the same. Don't place one above the other while steaming.
5.Steam it for 12-15 minutes.Allow it to cool down.
6.When warm,unwrap the turmeric leave and Enjoy suli rotti/patholi warm or cold.
7.You can have these Plain or with milk or ghee.
Note
1.You can prepare by using direct Rice flour + water to make paste.
2.If you don't find turmeric leaves,you can steam in banana leaves.
3.While steaming, don't keep one above the other as it will stick to each other.
4.Add the amount of filling according to your sweet tooth :).
